Add Google Analytics (GA4) and HTML Tag Verification to Your Site

Last updated: February 2026

This guide explains how to connect your site to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) using the built-in Analytics settings inside your admin dashboard.

No code editing is required. Once your Measurement ID is added, tracking begins automatically across all pages.

What You Need Before You Start

You will need:

  • A Google account

  • A Google Analytics property (GA4)

  • Your GA4 Measurement ID (format: G-XXXXXXXXXX)

If you do not yet have a Google Analytics property, create one first inside analytics.google.com.

Create a GA4 Property

Sign in at:

https://analytics.google.com/

Select Admin in the lower left.

Under the Account column:

  • Click Create Account (if needed)

  • Then click Create Property

Choose:

  • Property name (your site name)

  • Reporting time zone

  • Currency

Continue until Google creates your property.

Get Your Measurement ID

Once your GA4 property is created:

  • Go to Admin

  • Under the Property column, click Data Streams

  • Select your Web stream

  • You will see a field labeled:

Measurement ID

It looks like this:

G-ABC123XYZ9

Copy this value exactly.

You only need the ID. Not the full script.

Add Your Measurement ID to Your Site

Log in to your site admin.

Go to:

Site Settings → Analytics

Locate the field:

Google Analytics GA4 ID

Paste your Measurement ID (for example: G-ABC123XYZ9).

Click Save.

That is all.

Tracking is now active across your entire site.

Confirm That Tracking Is Working

Open your website in a new browser tab.

Then return to Google Analytics and go to:

Reports → Realtime

You should see at least one active user within a few seconds.

If you do not see activity:

  • Make sure you pasted the correct Measurement ID

  • Confirm you saved changes

  • Clear your browser cache and reload the site

How It Works

When you add your Measurement ID, your site automatically loads Google’s tracking script inside the <head> section of every page.

No additional configuration is required.

Because tracking is handled at the platform level:

  • It applies to all pages

  • It continues working through updates

  • It does not require editing templates

  • It does not require DNS changes

Remove Google Analytics

If you want to stop tracking:

  • Go back to Site Settings → Analytics

  • Remove the Measurement ID

  • Click Save

Tracking will stop immediately.

Optional: Add Google Search Console

Do this exactly:

  1. Go to Search Console home.

  2. Click the dropdown in the top left.

  3. Click Add property.

  4. Choose the option on the right:

URL prefix

Enter: e.g. https://selftalkeffect.com

(not just the domain — include https)

Click Continue.

Now you will see:

HTML tag verification option

That is the one your platform supports. Choose:

HTML tag
Copy the content value
Paste into your admin field
Save

Click Verify

It will pass immediately.

Important Difference

Domain property:

  • Covers http, https, www, non-www, subdomains

  • Requires DNS

  • No meta tag allowed

URL prefix property:

  • Covers exactly what you enter

  • Allows HTML tag verification

  • Works with your built-in field in your ecommerce area

Summary

To add Google Analytics to your site:

  • Create a GA4 property

  • Copy your Measurement ID

  • Paste it into Site Settings

  • Save

Tracking begins instantly and applies across your entire site.

XML Sitemap

Every site automatically includes a built-in XML sitemap.

You do not need to install plugins, edit code, or generate files manually. Your sitemap updates automatically as you add or remove content.

This helps search engines discover your pages more efficiently.

Where to Find Your Sitemap

Your sitemap is located at:

https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

Replace yourdomain.com with your actual site address.

Examples:

https://selftalkeffect.com/sitemap.xml
https://reduce-overwhelm.djangify.com/sitemap.xml

Open that URL in your browser and you should see an XML file listing your pages.

What the Sitemap Includes

Your sitemap automatically includes:

  • Pages

  • Products

  • Blog posts

  • Categories

  • Other indexable content

It updates automatically when you:

  • Publish new content

  • Edit content

  • Remove content

No manual updates are required.

Submit Your Sitemap to Google Search Console

After verifying your site in Google Search Console:

Go to:

Indexing → Sitemaps

In the “Add a new sitemap” field, enter:   sitemap.xml

Click Submit.

Google will now regularly crawl your site using this sitemap.

Do You Need to Resubmit It?

No. Once submitted, Google will continue checking the same sitemap automatically. If you publish new content, it will be included without needing to resubmit.

Troubleshooting

If visiting /sitemap.xml returns an error:

  • Make sure your site is live (not in maintenance mode)

  • Confirm your domain is correctly connected

  • Clear your browser cache and reload

If the issue continues, contact support.
