Pinterest: Tag, Domain Claim and Purchase Tracking

Last updated: October 2026

Your shop can connect to Pinterest in three optional ways: claiming your website, adding the Pinterest tag to your pages, and sending purchases to Pinterest so your ads can be measured. All the settings are in one place.

Where to find the settings

Go to Site Settings and open the section called Pinterest (Ads and Conversions). It has four fields. You can fill in only the ones you need.

Claim your website

Claiming your site on Pinterest connects your pins to your shop. Pinterest gives you a meta tag that includes p:domain_verify. Copy only the value inside content, a long mix of letters and numbers, and paste it into Pinterest Domain Verification Code. Save, then go back to Pinterest and ask it to verify your site.

The Pinterest tag

Paste your Pinterest Tag ID to add the Pinterest tag to your pages. It records page visits and add-to-cart actions and supports retargeting. It also runs on your order confirmation page. Leave the field blank if you do not want the tag.

Purchase tracking (Conversions API)

To send purchases to Pinterest from your shop's server, fill in two fields:

  • Pinterest Ad Account ID: from your Pinterest Ads Manager.
  • Pinterest Conversion Access Token: from Pinterest Ads Manager, under Conversions. It is saved encrypted. On a self-hosted shop you need an ENCRYPTION_KEY set first, or saving shows an error and nothing is stored. See The Encryption Key.

Treat the token like a password and never paste it into a chat with an AI.

Privacy

The tag and purchase tracking send information about visits and orders to Pinterest. Check that your privacy and cookie policies cover it before you turn it on.

For Google, see Add Google Analytics (GA4) and HTML Tag Verification.
